We are also pleased to announce that Daniel S. Goldberg of East Carolina University has joined our editorial group as book review editor. We look forward to working with Daniel in the coming years to continue our strong history of publishing thoughtful reviews of bioethics books.

Daniel S. Goldberg

Daniel S. Goldberg is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Bioethics & Interdisciplinary Studies in the Brody School of Medicine, East Carolina University. He holds a B.A. with honors in philosophy from Wesleyan University, and received his J.D. magna cum laude from the University of Houston Law Center in 2002. He clerked for a state supreme court justice and practiced pharmaceutical, hospital, and insurance litigation for several years before earning his Ph.D. with distinction in the medical humanities from the Institute for the Medical Humanities, University of Texas Medical Branch in 2009. He is trained as a bioethicist and an interdisciplinary scholar, and his work centers on public health ethics, public health law/policy, and the history of medicine & public health. More specifically, he is interested in population-level bioethics, and his current research agenda focuses on:

  • the social determinants of health;
  • chronic illness (esp. type II diabetes and pain);
  • health inequities; and
  • stigma.

In addition, he maintains an active research program in the history of medicine and public health, and focuses primarily on three topics in mid-to-late 19th c. America: the history of pain without lesion, the history of medical imaging (especially X-rays), and the history of the social determinants of health in American public health policies. His doctoral dissertation addressed the undertreatment of pain in the U.S., and he has been actively writing, teaching, and speaking on the subject of pain since 2004.
