We seek a highly motivated and collaborative postdoctoral scholar to join an interdisciplinary research program on experiences of dementia and on the development of new treatments and technologies for neurologic disorders. This work will be directed by Winston Chiong, MD PhD in the UCSF Department of Neurology; in conjunction with Daniel Dohan, PhD (UCSF Institute for Health Policy Studies), Elizabeth Dzeng, PhD MD MPH (UCSF Hospital Medicine; Social & Behavioral Sciences), and diverse interdisciplinary collaborators.
The postdoctoral fellow will conduct qualitative research (including field observation, interviews, and focus groups) with people who have dementia, neurotechnology users, caregivers, and people engaged in the development of novel technologies; and will analyze these data to prepare manuscripts and presentations for national and international meetings. This work will be embedded in a broad research program on ethical issues in neuroscience (decisionlab.ucsf.edu), in the UCSF Bioethics program (bioethics.ucsf.edu, also directed by Dr. Chiong), and in the UCSF Medical Cultures Lab (cultureofmedicine.org).
Required qualifications
– Doctoral degree or equivalent in behavioral or social sciences (including anthropology, sociology, and science studies), bioethics, or related fields (including philosophy, law, health policy, nursing, social work, neuroscience, and psychology)
– Demonstrated success in independent ethnographic research
– Exceptional written and oral communication skills
Preferred qualifications
– Experience working with clinical populations
– Experience working with health professionals and/or biomedical scientists
– Prior interest/experience in neuroscience
– Interest in team science and transdisciplinary collaboration
– Two-year commitment (with opportunities to extend as mutually desired)
