Case Western Reserve University (CWRU), Department of Bioethics (DoB) is seeking a qualified candidate to fill a postdoctoral scholar position that will be primarily based at The MetroHealth System’s (MHS) Center for Biomedical Ethics (CBME). This is a one-year appointment with the possibility of renewing for an additional year. This post-doc/scholarship will enable the scholar to become proficient in clinical ethics, with particular emphasis on clinical ethics consultation, as well as opportunities in clinical education, research/scholarship, and outreach.

Responsibilities and Duties:
Consult Service (50%)
● Serve as an ethics consultant under the supervision of a senior ethicist
○ Respond to consult requests
○ Regularly participate in ICU and other rounds/meetings throughout the hospital
○ Develop a case consult portfolio with the aim of becoming a certified ethics consultant (HEC-C) through ASBH's certification process

Education
● Develop and deliver clinical bioethics educational talks for clinical audiences
● Assist with the precepting of rotating students and trainees as appropriate
● Attend educational and training sessions as required

Scholarship/Research
● Identify at least one research focus, develop a project in light of that focus, and carry out that project with the goal of presenting at professional conferences and publishing in peer-reviewed journals

Outreach/Advocacy
● Develop and deliver ethics outreach and/or advocacy projects in the community.

Other
● Support administrative tasks as needed
● Interface with the Department of Bioethics at CWRU as appropriate for education, research, and service efforts
● Be on site at the hospital ~ 5 days/week when on service and ~3 days/week when off service

In compliance with the City of Cleveland’s Pay Transparency Ordinance (effective October 27, 2025), the annual starting base salary range for this position is $55,000 – $62,652. CWRU considers factors such as (but not limited to) the specific grant funding and the terms of the research grant when extending an offer. Postdocs receive
individual and family healthcare benefits, life insurance, and employee assistance.

Qualifications
1. Doctorate in bioethics, philosophy, medicine, nursing, law, psychology, religious studies, social work, sociology, or related field.
2. Must be eligible to work in the United States.
3. Excellent oral and written communication skills and interpersonal skills; must demonstrate the ability to effectively and professionally communicate and work with various individuals within and external to MHS and CWRU.
4. Educational and presentational skills; ability to distill and communicate practical clinical ethics concepts and principles in clinical education settings.
5. Strong organization skills; ability to multi-task, prioritize and meet deadlines. Must demonstrate attention to detail and accuracy, time management skills, and follow-through. Must be able to work under pressure and conform to shifting priorities, demands and timeline.
6. Ability to work effectively independently and collaboratively within an interdisciplinary team. Must be highly motivated, responsible, dependable, and a self-starter.
7. Effective problem-solving skills; must demonstrate innovation and creativity, excellent analytical skills, sound judgment, and good decision making.
