In a similar vein to the previous post, Rick Weiss of the Washington Post reports that that US Patent and Trademark Office has officially denied a patent for a “humanzee” – a half chimpanzee, half human hybrid.
In April 1998, scientists Jeremy Rifkin and Stuart Newman, who are both opposed to genetically modified organisms, applied for a patent for a humanzee, to fuel debate and to draw attention to potential abuses in transgenic/genetic engineering experimentation.
