Assistant / Associate Professor – Center for Bioethics and Health Policy
The Institute of Public and Preventive Health (IPPH) and Center for Bioethics and Health Policy (CBHP) at
Augusta University are actively recruiting a faculty member at Assistant or Associate Professor rank.
The position is full-time, tenure track starting on or before 1 July 2023.
CBHP was established within IPPH in 2016 with a goal to support and enhance clinical ethics
consultation within the Augusta University Health enterprise; integrate educational programs in
bioethics and health policy across Augusta University colleges and schools; inform local, regional and
national health policy decision-making; and comprehensively conduct interdisciplinary research aimed
at improving regional health and health care delivery. The successful candidate will have the skills to
develop and teach courses across the field of Bioethics (e.g. clinical ethics and public health ethics). The
Center’s current Strategic Research Plan (2021 – 2026) prioritizes three themes: Ethics and the Health
Professions; Public Health: Ethics and Policy; and Community Engagement, Social Justice and Advocacy.
Special consideration will be given to candidates with research interests within one or more of these
broad areas.
IPPH at Augusta University is an interdisciplinary research institute at a rapidly growing public university.
The institutional mission of IPPH is to improve health, reduce health disparities, and prevent injury and
illness through research, service, leadership, and training.
In addition to an appointment within CBHP/IPPH, this position will also have an appointment,
commensurate with experience, within an academic department in one of Augusta University’s other
nine colleges and schools.
Expectations (% Effort)
Teaching (50%) – Responsibilities include the development and teaching of courses within a
Bioethics Master’s program currently under development, the existing MPH program and/or the
individual’s academic departmental programs. Additional opportunities for teaching may also
be available within Augusta University Health enterprise, Medical College of Georgia and across
the Augusta University colleges.
Research (45%) – The successful candidate is expected to maintain an active research profile in
health ethics and policy, broadly understood; participate in collaborative and interdisciplinary
research; seek external funding and exhibit potential to sustain a funded research program;
publish in top-tier peer-reviewed journals; present at professional meetings; and mentor
student research with the Institute’s established Summer Scholars Program. It is expected that
25% of salary will be recovered by grant funding after 3-years of the appointment.
Service (5%) – Provide service to the Institute, home academic department, College, and
University through participation in faculty meetings and/or committee service. Provide service
through involvement in professional organizations, serving as a journal manuscript reviewer,
and/or on peer-review panels for grant applications. Participate in multidisciplinary Clinical
Ethics Committee meetings.
Clinical (optional) – Candidates with significant prior experience in clinical consultation may be
eligible to devote some effort toward ethics consultation at Augusta University Medical Center
and the Children’s Hospital of Georgia. Preference may be given to a candidate who is HEC-C
accredited. Such a candidate must be able to navigate complex ethical issues as they arise in the
clinical setting and be adept at cross-cultural care, end of life/palliative care decision-making,
and possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
Minimum Qualifications
Applicants must have earned a doctoral degree in Bioethics, Philosophy, Theology, Public Health,
Health Policy or a related discipline. MD or JD applicants with a master’s degree/experience in
bioethics or health policy are also encouraged to apply. The applicant should also have: a successful
track record of effective teaching in a university setting, ideally at graduate level; and an active research
profile, including peer-reviewed publications. A history of successfully obtaining extramural funding is
desirable.

IPPH was founded in 2012 as a multidisciplinary public health research institute. We currently have
extramural funding of over $9 million per year. Located on the Health Sciences Campus of Augusta
