The Center for Medical Ethics and Health Policy at Baylor College of Medicine is seeking a full-time Senior Research Assistant for a non-laboratory research position. The individual hired will be responsible for providing research support on projects examining the ethical, legal and social implications of emerging technologies in healthcare, including digital health and artificial intelligence, computer perception (e.g. digital phenotyping) and privacy-by-design technologies (blockchain).
The Senior Research Assistant will be part of an interdisciplinary team of researchers led by Dr. Kristin Kostick-Quenet.
In addition to supporting the Center’s robust research program, the Senior Research Assistant will also have the opportunity to participate in professional and academic development sessions hosted by the Center. Such development opportunities include journal clubs, speaker series, career development information sessions, peer mentorship, and programming on grant writing, academic presentations, and goal planning. Primary duties and responsibilities:
• Manage instrument development (interview/focus group guides, survey experiments and Delphi
materials) and data collection for various research projects
• Conduct interviews and focus groups and manage qualitative data management and analysis
• Develop and execute processes for quantitative data quality control
• Manage and clean quantitative datasets stored in database systems
• Conduct basic quantitative analysis and produce interpretations of results (e.g., graphs, charts,
summary tables)
• Conduct comprehensive literature searches in the areas of bioethics, science, social science and
health policy literature
• Assist with publishing research findings as manuscripts in relevant academic journals
• Contribute to qualitative (primarily interviews) and quantitative (primarily surveys) data analysis
• Contribute to presentation preparation, such as pulling data and drafting slides
• Attend project meetings
• Perform other job-related duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in a related field
• Four years of relevant experience
Preferred Qualifications
• Master’s degree or PhD in bioethics, law, social or computer sciences, health policy,
public health, philosophy or related field
• Experience with qualitative and quantitative methodologies and data analysis software
programs (e.g., MAXQDA, Dedoose, nVivo, SPSS, STATA)
• Strong interest in bioethics, health policy, artificial intelligence, psychiatry and/or related issues
• Track record of publications in scientific and/or medical journals preferred
• Ability to display a professional, positive attitude with strong interpersonal skills and
communication skills required and must be able to work independently and collaboratively to meet deadlines
• Team oriented, collaborative mindset with an interest in creating value in any situation with
• insightful questions and suggestions
• Detail-oriented, self-motivated, efficient, and strong organizational skills
• Demonstrate a high degree of flexibility in accepting work assignments with the ability to
effectively prioritize tasks, understand processes, and resolve issues
