The Clinical Ethicist will be responsible for:

  • Providing ethics consultations, organizing and participating in clinical ethics rounds and other educational offerings, and collaborating with clinical teams, patients and families, to address ethical issues in health care and research for the predominantly-pediatric BCH patient population.
  • Leading or participating in development and review of hospital policies involving ethical considerations. May participate in organizational ethics activities and develop new ethics programs.
  • Supporting a culture of reflective discussion of ethical issues; facilitating change to strengthen moral community.
  • Contributing to the profession via research, publication, and participation in the activities of professional organizations and academic centers including the HMS Center for Bioethics.
  • Schedule is somewhat flexible, 20 hrs, working over 3-5 days per week.

To qualify, you must have:

  • At least a Bachelor’s Degree in bioethics, moral philosophy or other discipline directly relevant to job responsibilities. Prefer Master’s Degree or other advanced ethics training and clinical degree in health professional field.  Healthcare Ethics Consultant certification would be a plus.
  • 3+ years of experience in clinical bioethics.  Healthcare experience or relevant bioethics fellowship experience may be counted. Prefer 1+ year of bioethics work experience, preferably in pediatric hospital or health delivery system.
  • Sensitivity in discussing ethical decisions regarding disclosure of potentially distressing information, appropriateness of life-sustaining treatment, donation of organs, and other matters potentially involving conflicts of interests and values. Prefer experience in having such conversations with individuals from a range of religious, cultural, racial and ethnic backgrounds and communities.
  • Demonstrated ability in multidisciplinary collaboration and the ability to initiate, prioritize, and manage multiple projects, working across multiple departmental lines of authority and accountability and under pressure to meet deadlines.
