Description
The Department of Bioethics (DoB) at the Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) School of Medicine invites applications for the position of Clinical Ethicist in the Center for Biomedical Ethics (CBME) at The MetroHealth System (MHS) and Instructor (non-tenure track) in the DoB at CWRU.

Responsibilities and Duties:
This position will be based in the CBME at MHS and be fully funded by MHS. The successful candidate’s efforts will be dedicated to clinical ethics consultation, clinical education, community outreach/advocacy, and related scholarship. There will be some opportunities for participation in the CWRU DoB, which has teaching programs at the undergraduate, graduate, and medical school levels.
● Serve as a clinical ethics consultant, assist with consult review and quality control, and help train junior clinical ethicists
● Contribute to CBME educational, research, scholarship, and outreach/advocacy programs
● Develop and deliver clinical bioethics educational, scholarship, and outreach/advocacy programs
● Attend and participate in relevant CBME and MHS meetings and assist with various administrative tasks

MHS is Cuyahoga County’s safety-net hospital system, serving more than 300,000 patients, two-thirds of whom are uninsured or covered by Medicare or Medicaid, and is a teaching hospital for CWRU. MHS is home to the county’s most experienced Level 1 Trauma Center and its renowned American Burn Association-verified adult and pediatric critical care burn center. MHS also provides medical care at the Cuyahoga County Corrections Center and is the County’s medical home for children in foster care. The CBME at MHS has a longstanding history of outstanding service, education, outreach, and scholarship. Its 24/7/365 clinical ethics consult service is very active, with ~500 consults in 2025. The CBME also maintains robust educational programming, including monthly hospital-wide Bioethics Grand Rounds, nursing orientation, correctional health care staff orientation, general practice dentistry residency ethics didactics, and semi-monthly discussions promoting engagement between clinical ethics and nursing. The CBME also welcomes rotating undergraduate, graduate, and medical students as observers and leads discussions about ethical issues students encounter. The CBME’s nationally- and internationally-recognized faculty have expertise in clinical ethics, burn ethics, correctional health care ethics, advance care planning outreach, ethics education, capacity and autonomy, and medical facilitation.

Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
● Graduate degree in related field, e.g., philosophy, medicine, law, nursing, bioethics, social work, sociology, anthropology, religious studies
● 2+ years of clinical ethics consultation experience in a clinical setting
● 2+ years clinical ethics teaching experience
● Proven abilities to participate in clinical ethics education, scholarship, and outreach/advocacy
● Proven ability to collaborate
● Must be eligible to work in the United States

Preferred Qualifications:
● 2+ years experience of clinical ethics consultation with burn, trauma, inpatient behavioral health, and correctional patients
● Experience supervising a clinical ethics consultation service
● Bilingual, especially Spanish
● HEC-C

REQUIRED SKILLS
1. Excellent oral and written communication skills and interpersonal skills; must demonstrate the ability to effectively and professionally communicate and work with various individuals within and external to MHS and CWRU.
2. Educational and presentational skills; ability to distill and communicate practical clinical ethics concepts and principles in clinical education settings.
3. Strong organization skills; ability to multi-task, prioritize and meet deadlines. Must demonstrate attention to detail and accuracy, time management skills, and follow-through. Must be able to work under pressure and conform to shifting priorities, demands and timelines.
4. Ability to work effectively independently and collaboratively within an interdisciplinary team. Must be highly motivated, responsible, dependable, and a self-starter.
5. Effective problem-solving skills; must demonstrate innovation and creativity, excellent analytical skills, sound judgment, and good decision making.
6. Good computer skills, including database management.
7. Ability to communicate in person and remotely.

The annual starting base salary range for this position is from $79,000-$80,000. CWRU considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate’s work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.
