Clinical Ethics Fellowship
The Institute for Bioethics & Health Humanities (IBHH) at the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) invites applications for Clinical Ethics Fellowship, part of our broader Visiting Scholars Program, which provides intensive training in clinical ethics consultation in a variety of health care settings and diverse patient populations, including critical care, pediatrics, OBGYN, etc. The Fellow will learn a relational approach to ethics consultation informed by the health humanities. In addition to their clinical duties, the Fellow will conduct bioethics and health humanities research congruent with their interests and be afforded the opportunity to teach health students and professionals and graduate students. The Fellow will increase the points of contact between the Clinical Ethics Consultation Service and patients, families, faculty, and staff at our Galveston and other campuses. The Fellowship program is tailored to meet the strengths and needs of each fellow, and involves a involves a one-year, full-time commitment with an option to extend for an additional year at the program director’s discretion.
Candidates must have a PhD, JD, or MD (or equivalent) with preference given to candidates with doctorates in bioethics, philosophy, theology, nursing, behavioral sciences, social sciences, medicine, or law. Candidates should have strong communication skills, experience working with diverse teams, and be able to work both collaboratively and independently to achieve goals. Familiarity with patient care in a hospital setting is preferred.

Postdoctoral Research Fellowship
The Institute for Bioethics & Health Humanities (IBHH) at the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) invites applications for Postdoctoral Research Fellows as part of our Visiting Scholars Program for a one-year appointment with the possibility to extend for a second year. This semi-structured program integrates fellows into interdisciplinary research projects while affording them time to focus on their own research.
We are hiring for multiple positions and especially looking for fellows interested in:
1. Substance use disorders. IBHH and the Center for Addiction Research at UTMB are collaborating on a project regarding ethics, public policy, and stigma as it relates to substance use disorders. The fellow will play an integral role in shaping this project.
2. Translational science and Implementation Science, including approaches informed by Science and Technology Studies or the Science of Team Science. The fellow will work with IBHH faculty on implementation studies using qualitative or mixed methods.
3. Health humanities. Research engaging narratives of health and illness, history, and critical theory. We are interested in co-developing grant-supported projects in the health humanities that are collaborative and that include applied dimensions for practice or policy.
4. Environmental health. Social, legal, ethical and policy issues related to environmental justice, social justice in public health or One Health research.
Postdoctoral fellows will have opportunities to engage in interdisciplinary, multidisciplinary, and applied work across campus and with relevant communities to translate their scholarship into impact. Fellows will be supported and mentored by IBHH faculty and collaborators from other UTMB departments in writing grants through major funding agencies such as the National Institutes of Health, National Science Foundation, Social Science Research Council, National Endowment for the Humanities, philanthropic funders, as well as the variety of internal funding mechanisms available at UTMB. In addition to funding research, the grant writing aspect of the fellowship includes the possibility of funding further years of postdoctoral training as well as transitional career grants.
Candidates must have a PhD, JD, MD or other terminal degree with preference given to candidates who take one or more of the following approaches/methods to the topics listed above:
• Qualitative and/or mixed methods
• Empirical Bioethics
• Science and Technology Studies
• Community-Partnership or Engagement and/or Patient-Public Involvement
