The Director of the Bioethics Center serves as the subject matter expert and leader for the Center. The Director defines and implements the teaching and other academic missions of the Center. The Bioethics Center Director provides leadership over the institution’s Certificate Program in Pediatric Bioethics and sets the overall direction of its mission. The Center Director also serves as a resource, both internally and externally, on complex ethical issues related to pediatric health care.
The Center Director will have the opportunity to hold a suitable Academic Rank (Associate Professor or Professor) at the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Medicine and the University of Kansas School of Medicine. They will be appointed by and report directly to the Chair of the Department of Pediatrics.
Administrative / Leadership
• Develop short-and-long-range plans for the Center that are aligned with organizational goals (1, 3, and 5-year strategic plans / vision).
• Lead and direct Center faculty and staff in identifying opportunities for the Center’s research and educational programs. These should be placed within the local, national, and international contexts that are shaping academics, bioethics, and healthcare.
• Align our current ongoing reviews / assessments with assessments of well-being and employee satisfaction”.
• Encourage and support a positive work environment to ensure positive staff morale and quality services, including annual assessment of well-being.
• Meet no less than annually with other Bioethics Center Faculty members to review their performance and help with career development using the OFD assessment tool or other department agreed upon method.
• Solicits feedback on their own performance from the Center and the Department.
• Serve as a role model for effective, honest, and well-intended communication. This includes communication of appropriate information from the Department to the Center and Hospital to other Division personnel in a timely manner.
• Recruit and retain faculty and staff that match and fulfill the respective missions of the Bioethics Center, Department of Pediatrics, and Children’s Mercy Kansas City.
• Lead appropriate measures that monitor and prioritize the success of the Center’s programs.
• Regularly attend and be engaged in monthly division director meetings & medical staff meetings.
• Other duties as assigned by the Department Chair or Physician-In-Chief.
• Serves as a liaison between the Department of Pediatrics and Children’s Mercy Research Institute in matters relevant to pediatric bioethics including those addressing academic and educational collaborations, research and translational science, and population health and outcomes.
Education
• Provides leadership and strategic oversight of the Center’s Certificate in Pediatric Bioethics Program.
• Serves as an expert on bioethics issues in pediatric health care and provides educational opportunities to faculty, staff, and the community.
• Regularly attends and encourages division faculty and trainees to attend departmental meetings and opportunities for development, including “Professor Rounds”, “Grand Rounds”, “Ethics Committee Brown Bag Workshops”, and other educational opportunities.
Research
• Direct an active research program and seek extramural funding to support that research.
• Research leading to publications in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at professional meetings.
• Collaborates with other Children’s Mercy and CMRI investigators on research and other projects.
Financial/Stewardship
• Leads collaboration with administrative and clinical leaders to monitor financial performance to ensure that budgetary objectives are attained while maintaining quality care standards.
• Work with department administration to develop a budget for the Center.
• Regularly assess the Center’s workforce to ensure capacity and adequacy to sufficiently achieve its mission.
• Actively seek extramural funding to support the work of the Center. The Director will partner closely with the Department of Philanthropy to identify sources of philanthropic support.
