Mayo Clinic is pleased to announce a new search for an open rank faculty member in biomedical ethics. The successful candidate will be an accomplished bioethics scholar interested in ethical issues raised by artificial intelligence and digital health. Data-driven translational research and applications of artificial intelligence in healthcare have myriad ethical implications, including but not limited to confidentiality, trust, data governance, and the independence of clinical judgment. Mayo Clinic’s long-term investment in digital health and data science necessitate support for bioethical scholarship examining its implications. The candidate must have a strong publication record and be committed to supporting team science in collaboration with colleagues in Mayo Clinic’s Department of Artificial Intelligence, Center for Digital Health, Center for Clinical and Translational Science, and/or Biomedical Ethics Program. Service and teaching responsibilities of the position will likely include some combination of serving on institutional committees, teaching bioethics courses, and providing consultative services related to digital innovations in healthcare, including service on the Bioethics Council on Artificial Intelligence and Clinical and Translational Research Ethics Consultation Service. The successful candidate will be a core member of the Biomedical Ethics Program and participate in ongoing research, education, and service within the Program. Academic rank will be pursued in Biomedical Ethics, with secondary appointment options available to interested applicants. Biomedical Ethics at Mayo Clinic The Biomedical Ethics Program at Mayo Clinic examines difficult questions about right and wrong in medicine and biomedical science. Our faculty members conduct empirical and normative research, teach courses on biomedical ethics, and engage in policy discussions about ethical questions. As scientific discoveries are made and health care evolves, the values at stake in biomedical science and health care must be revisited and reexamined. The solutions to bioethical debates are rarely straightforward; they involve complex trade-offs for scientists, clinicians, and health care organizations. How such questions are answered strikes at the heart of what it means to conduct biomedical science and deliver health care responsibly. The Biomedical Ethics Program provides institutional and national leadership on ethical issues raised by translational research and the integration of new medical technologies into patient care.
