We are pleased to announce recruitment for a postdoctoral fellow position in bioethics/neuroethics at the University of Washington. This position is funded by an NIH grant (#1R01MH130457-01) focused on ethical issues related to support for research participants in neural technology device trials (BRAIN Pioneers). The postdoc will work with the UW neuroethics team, a multi-disciplinary group led by Sara Goering and Eran Klein, based in the Department of Philosophy, with close connections to the UW Center for Neurotechnology (CNT). Work will involve conceptual, normative and empirical bioethics research related to neurotechnology.

We seek a scholar with a background and interest in conceptual, normative and empirical bioethics/neuroethics research. The disciplinary background is open (philosophy, law, anthropology, public health, science and technology studies, or related field), but the position will be housed within the UW Department of Philosophy. The postdoctoral fellow will collaborate with Sara Goering (Philosophy, Disability Studies) and Eran Klein (Philosophy, Neurology) on current and planned qualitative studies and conceptual projects focused on medical neurotechnologies. The postdoctoral fellow will be expected to help gather qualitative data, conduct analyses and interpret findings, and explore conceptual and policy implications of findings. In addition, successful candidates will need to demonstrate the capacity for independent project management related to qualitative research.

This position will provide full time (100% FTE) postdoctoral research salary support for one year, with possible renewal for additional years. Funds for travel to conferences for research dissemination and professional development are available. The position is on-site at the University of Washington in Seattle.
Postdoctoral scholars are represented by UAW 4121 and are subject to the collective bargaining agreement, unless agreed exclusion criteria apply. For more information, please visit the University of Washington Labor Relations website.

Review of applications will begin on October 15, 2022 and will continue until the position is filled. We anticipate a start date in January 2023, but an earlier start will be considered.

Qualifications
Eligible candidates will be trained in bioethics, with a preference for candidates with a competence in neuroethics broadly construed, and who have earned a PhD, JD, or MD within the last five years or will have completed a degree by January 2023. PhD in philosophy is preferred; those with relevant experience but degrees in other related areas (law, anthropology, public health, STS) should also apply. Experience with qualitative methods and data analytic techniques is highly recommended. Candidates with excellent written and verbal communication skills and demonstrated ability to work in multi-disciplinary environments are preferred.

Application Instructions
Applicants must submit a current copy of their curriculum vitae, a cover letter describing their experience and interest in ethics and neurotechnology, one writing sample (peer reviewed publication preferred), and contact information for three academic references (name, title, institution, email address, phone number, relationship to applicant). Materials should be submitted through Interfolio
(https://apply.interfolio.com/110316).

Please contact Prof Sara Goering (sgoering@uw.edu) or Eran Klein (kleineuw@uw.edu) with questions.
