Job Summary
Full time position
This role coordinates with management in providing expert leadership and managerial guidance for teams in the performance of the Department of Medical Ethics [DME]. The role assists the leadership in planning, organizing, leading, and managing the resources of the Department of Medical Ethics for the effective and efficient achievement of organizational and departmental goals and priorities.
This role actively communicates, coordinates, and collaborates with leadership throughout CHOP to create partnerships that enhance the ethical quality of deliberation, decision-making, and conduct of all members of the CHOP staff.
Job Responsibilities
Has lead responsibility for specific functions of the Department, including:
Co-Chairing and support of the CHOP Ethics Committee
Education and engagement of CHOP nursing staff regarding medical ethics
Participates in Department activities regarding the following functions:
Conduct of clinical ethics consultations
Development, review, and revision of ethically pertinent CHOP policies
Advancing the quality of pediatric ethics with patients, families, and society
Wide-ranging efforts to improve the ethical quality of CHOP staff conduct
Assists in the establishment and consistent implementation of departmental written policies and standards of excellence, consistent with and advancing CHOP’s mission. Assists in periodically reviewing, revising, and documenting all key departmental processes and standards to ensure contemporaneous completeness and accuracy.
Identifies priorities and resources to facilitate staff development including clinical ethics consultation supervision, competency assessment, professional skill building, and team building.
Creates and maintains an environment where staff feel valued, appreciated, and recognized.
Recruits, coaches, develops, and retains qualified, competent staff. Ensures that all staff meet all requirements of their positions.
Required Education and Experience
Required Education: Master’s degree
Required Experience:
Nine (9) years related ethics experience
Five (5) years of clinical ethics consultation experience
Five (5) years of lead, supervisory or management experience
Preferred Education, Experience & Cert/Lic
Preferred Education: Masters of Bioethics or in related field
Preferred Experience:
Ten (10) years related ethics experience
Seven (7) years of lead, supervisory or management experience
Five (5) years of clinical care experience
Preferred Licenses/certificates/registrations:
Healthcare Ethics Consultant-Certified (HCEC-C)
