The John J. Lynch, MD Center for Ethics at MedStar Washington Hospital Center is seeking applicants for the position of Staff Clinical Ethicist. The successful applicant will expand one of the most active ethics consultation services (~500 consultations a year) and longest running hospital ethics programs (since 1982) to MedStar’s Baltimore hospitals: MedStar Union Memorial Hospital and MedStar Good Samaritan Hospital. The Staff Clinical Ethicist will join a rotation of seasoned ethicists in conducting clinical ethics consultations and assisting in ethics education and policy development, and will have significant on-the-job time to devote to ethics research and scholarship. Our target start date is July 2023, and applications will be accepted and reviewed on a rolling basis.

Staff Clinical Ethicist

Primary duties and responsibilities:

-Provides clinical ethics consultation services for MedStar Union Memorial Hospital (MUMH) and MedStar Good Samaritan Hospital (MGSH) and may rotate with other members of the John J. Lynch, MD Center for Ethics to provide ethics consultation coverage for MedStar Washington Hospital Center and/or other designated MedStar hospitals.
-Contributes to performance improvement and peer review initiatives to maintain and improve high quality clinical ethics consultation services.
-Promotes medical ethics by raising awareness and utilization of clinical ethics consultation services by providing ongoing and ad hoc ethics education programming to MedStar clinicians and administrators, serving as an Ethics representative on relevant hospital committees, joining select clinical rounds, and building and maintaining relationships with key hospital stakeholders.
-Assists with administration of the MUMH and MGSH ethics committees and/or ethics committee(s) of other designated MedStar hospitals.
-Contributes to the development of the field of clinical ethics and the reputation of MedStar Health as a leader in clinical ethics through scholarship, participation in and presentations to select conferences and symposia, approved collaboration with relevant community groups, non-profits, and academic institutions, and/or participation with relevant local and national boards, committees, and working groups.
-Reviews and assists in development, revision, and implementation of organizational policies related to clinical ethics. Assists in identifying and addressing moral distress among hospital staff, and collaborates in maintaining and improving practices, policies, and procedures relating to organizational ethics.
-Contributes to the supervision and education of ethics trainees, interns, research assistants, etc., and provides orientation to new members of the Center for Ethics.
-Operates as a member of and under the supervision of the Director of the John J. Lynch, MD Center for Ethics at MedStar Washington Hospital Center, and participates in staff meetings, trainings, and other group activities and projects of the John J. Lynch, MD Center for Ethics.
-Acts in accordance with Catholic health care ethics, including the Ethical & Religious Directives when at MGSH.

Minimum Qualifications
Education/Training:
Master’s degree in Philosophy, Ethics, Bioethics, Theology, or an equivalent discipline is required.
Doctorate degree in Philosophy, Ethics, Bioethics, Theology, or an equivalent terminal degree (e.g., JD, MD) is preferred.
Successful completion of a fellowship in clinical ethics is preferred.
Experience
Approximately two to three years of progressively more responsible job-related experience.
Previous clinical ethics consultation experience is preferred.
