Abstract
Many times over the past several years I have had spirited, important discussions with bioethics colleagues about professionalizing our field. Most of these conversations occurred during formal meetings of groups grappling with ways to ensure the quality of health care ethics consultation. These groups have included the American Society for Bioethics and Humanities (ASBH) Board, the ASBH Standing Committee on Clinical Ethics Consultation Affairs (CECA), the ASBH Core Competencies for Health Care Ethics Consultation Task Force, the ASBH Clinical Ethics Task Force (which wrote Improving Competencies in Health Care Ethics Consultation: An Educational Guide), and the Association of Bioethics Program Directors (ABPD).
