Arthur Caplan in a Chicago Tribune opinion piece says that President Obama’s “ongoing battle with cigarettes provides an enormous public health opportunity to do something to reduce the 400,000 American lives lost every year to smoking.”
Caplan goes on to argue, rightly I think, that the President isn’t your average American in many ways when it comes to access to information about the dangers of smoking or smoking cessation methods or healthcare. So while he might be raising awareness about the necessity of kicking the habit, the President’s success rate is likely to be significantly higher than Joe Sixpack.
