The University of Miami Miller School of Medicine’s Institute for Bioethics and Health Policy has for 30 years emphasized work in ethics and health information technology. It is seeking applications for an Associate Professor level position to focus on this topic.

Applicants should have an exemplary record of funded research and publications in ethics, best practices, governance or other topics in biomedical informatics or closely related fields; have experience as an instructor or curriculum developer in the areas of data science ethics or research ethics; be familiar with academic medical center operations, including electronic health records, laboratory information systems, and medical education; and have experience with or be willing to learn about hospital ethics processes and to assist in an ethics consult service.

Areas of particular interest include the development and use of artificial intelligence techniques in healthcare delivery, health-related research, and quality improvement activities; ethical issues related to the use and design of digital health applications, which could include eHealth tools such as patient portals; and the ethical, legal, and social implications of genomic medicine, including bioinformatics. The successful applicant will have an interest in public health informatics or digital epidemiology.

Though issues surrounding bias, explainability, governance, etc. of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning tools are receiving a great deal of attention, these issues are not new in informatics. The successful candidate will be able to think creatively about these issues as they arise in clinical practice, research, and public health.

Experience in IT fields highly relevant to empirical ethical inquiry, such as human-computer interaction, user-centered design, usability, etc., is highly desirable. Experience with Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) programs – especially regarding data management – is desired.

A competitive salary, research and travel funds, and a range of benefits are available.  Departmental appointment will depend on training and research history.

Interested applicants must apply online and should send a cover letter and CV to Prof. Kenneth W. Goodman, Director, University of Miami Institute for Bioethics and Health Policy, kgoodman@med.miami.edu, copying Ana Bezanilla, abezanil@med.miami.edu.
