Position Overview:
The Clinical Bioethicist, Bay Area provides expert analysis on ethical issues to designated Sutter Health Bay Area hospitals. This position is responsible for receiving and conducting all requests for ethics consultations, executing consultations and following up with patient cases after referral. The Clinical Bioethicist provides advice on ethics inquiries from physicians, staff, patients and families using the Sutter Health standardized ethics model for analysis. This position is responsible for effectively overseeing the ethics service at designated Sutter Health Bay Area hospital. The Clinical Bioethicist is responsible for educating and training the hospital ethics committees of Sutter Health Bay Area hospitals using materials developed by the PMHV. This position assists with policy development and implementation of policies at designated hospitals. This position participates in ethics rounds at Sutter Bay Area hospitals and lectures at appropriate Sutter Health ethics educational events. This position requires travel between the Sutter Bay Area hospitals.

JOB ACCOUNTABILITIES:
Critical and Analytical Thinking:
Must posses advanced knowledge of ethical reasoning and skill in ethical analysis, advanced knowledge of bioethical issues and concepts, basic knowledge of ethics-related health law, and skill in negotiation and mediation to build moral consensus.
Must identify and justify ranges of ethically acceptable options for health care practice, and evaluate evidence and arguments for and against these options.
Must have knowledge of current bioethics literature and ability to research issues that arise locally or in the discourse at large.
Must be able to develop education and training materials for Ethics Committee education at Sutter Bay area hospitals.
Have specific abilities to deal with cross-cultural bioethical issues as they arise in patient care.
Will assure compliance with accreditation and agency standards pertaining to clinical ethics and patient rights
Engage in quality improvement activities to enhance ethics as an essential element of health care quality.

Communication (Oral and Written):
Must be able to communicate with all members of the healthcare team as well as patients and /or their families. Must listen well and communicate interest, respect, support, and empathy to involved parties. Should have excellent problem solving abilities and a tolerance for ambiguity.
Must possess interdisciplinary collaboration skills
Should be able to explore practical problems and collaborate as a member of a multidisciplinary advisory team.
Must be able to educate involved parties regarding ethical dimensions of cases and have the ability to elicit the moral views of involved parties.
Must have the interpersonal skills to deal collegially with physicians, nurses, and other health care professionals in an active clinical setting.
Will be required to prepare and facilitate ethics education as part of medical education, nursing education and other education activities at Sutter Health Bay Area hospitals.
Must be able to use innovative methods of teaching to educate and train the Ethics Committees at Sutter Health Bay Area hospitals using materials developed by PMHV faculty and any additional materials developed as needed.
Must document all consultations appropriately in the medical record, requiring an understanding of detailed medical terminology and its application.
Must have ability to write academic papers, reports and grant proposals
Must have ability to present at Case Conferences, Grand Rounds and other educational activities at Sutter Bay hospitals.
Must have knowledge of privacy and confidentiality laws and regulations.

Other Job Functions:
Must manage and keep current the Sutter Health Bay Area hospitals’ ethics consultation documentation system.
As appropriate will participate in research projects being carried out in the Program in Medicine and Human Values.
Will work with Program Director to develop the Ethics Consultation Service in Sutter Health Bay Area hospitals.

Leadership and Professional Accountability:
Will participate in local and national bioethics activities and conferences.
May be asked to attend or present at local or national meetings.
Will attend and actively participate in the Ethics Committee meetings at Sutter Bay hospitals. Must meet the American Society for Bioethics and Humanities’ Core Competencies for Health Care Ethics Consultation.
Additional Requirements: This position requires regular travel between the Sutter West Bay Hospitals.

Qualifications:
Education:
Terminal degree (MD, PhD, JD) with advanced education in bioethics or a related field required.
Clinical ethics fellowship of at least one year at a recognized bioethics program or equivalent clinical experience required.

Experience:
Documented experience with clinical ethics consultation as individual consultant, experience with bioethics education and interdisciplinary collaboration required
Experience in a healthcare setting with patient care, ethics committee education/ethics committee operations required.
Knowledge and Skills:
Demonstrated knowledge of principles, concepts and methods of health care ethics consultation and bioethics education that can be implemented in patient care setting required
Knowledge of biomedical ethics terms, the bioethics literature, professional standards, methods of case analysis, Joint Commission guidelines, and detailed understanding of medical terminology required
Knowledge of California health care law required
Strong oral and written communication skills required
Excellent interpersonal skills required
Demonstrated experience with conflict resolution required
Ability to navigate complex, ethical patient care issues required.
Ability to support Ethics Committee Required.
